Use of AI in School Shops
This year’s Shop Managers’ Event, generously hosted by Upper Canada College, showcased the growing momentum of AI innovation across NISPA schools. The session featured an engaging workshop led by Kathleen Peak, UCC’s Head of Technology and Innovation, and was organized by Shop Manager Patti Cawker, who has been collaborating with the UCC team to integrate AI into the daily operations of the College Shop.
Participants were introduced to UCC’s custom AI‑powered chatbot, a tool designed to automate repetitive inquiries, streamline communication, and free up valuable staff time. Kathleen guided attendees through how to ask effective questions of AI—an essential skill for anyone looking to use these tools to simplify workflows and increase efficiency. Shop Managers left with hands‑on, practical skills they could immediately apply within their own school communities.
This event reflects a broader trend across NISPA: schools are increasingly exploring how AI can support parent engagement, improve communication, and reduce administrative load. The chatbot model demonstrated at UCC has exciting potential for Parent Associations as well. Similar tools could be used on PA grade chats to answer commonly asked questions—such as “When is the next dress‑down day,” “Is tomorrow a PA day,” or “When do report cards come out”—helping parents access accurate information quickly while reducing repetitive messaging for volunteers.
Following the workshop, attendees enjoyed a beautiful lunch provided by the UCC team and had the opportunity to tour the impressive College Shop, stocked with popular items from the “Blues” community.
